RHS Garden Rosemoor

RHS Garden Rosemoor

Set deep in the lovely North Devon countryside, RHS Garden Rosemoor has now come of age as a garden of national importance. Lady Anne Berry gifted Rosemoor to the RHS 11 years ago, since when the original eight acres have been greatly developed. To the huge range of plants collected by Lady Anne, the RHS has added features such as the Formal Garden, extensive herbaceous borders, herb and cottage gardens, a potager, the Foliage and Plantsman's Garden and extensive stream and lakeside plantings.

A visit to the 'Torrington 1646' tourist attraction is truly an ”experience” which will be enjoyed by all the family whatever their ages.

This is history as never before as we travel back to 1646 and meet the characters who populated Torrington, North Devon 's forgotten site of the last major battle of the English Civil War. See how they lived, loved, laughed and lied their way through the English Civil War.

Gnome Reserve

Gnome Reserve

Set amid truly rural countryside the four acre reserve comprises woodland, stream, 30 yard pond, meadow and garden - home to over one thousand gnomes and pixies, and about 250 labelled species of wild flowers, herbs, grasses and ferns. Children will love it because there is so much for them to discover from a woodpecker in a tree to a pixie flitting over clumps of comfrey. Recommended also for adults whose sophistication can have robbed them of a freshness of vision...

Torrington Commons

Torrington Commons

Towards the end of the 12th century a 'large waste called The Common'; was given to the people of Torrington. In 1889 the rights to this land were transferred, by an act of parliament, to an elected Committee of Conservators. They now administer 365 acres of land surrounding the town on all but the eastern side. The area is freely accessible to all, and visitors can walk the 20 miles of footpaths, ranging from the golf course in the north; ancient wood and wild flower meadow in the west; and dropping down to the beautiful river Torridge valley to the south of the town.

Torrington Golf Club

Attractive heathland course with 10 par 4s and 8 par 3s. The 4th/13th hole is one of the best par 3s in the area. Free draining and rarely affected by adverse weather. Friendly atmosphere. Visitors are unrestricted except on Sunday mornings when no visitors are allowed.

Kathleen and May

Kathleen and May

Kathleen and May, later to become famous as the last merchant schooner to earn her living at sea carrying cargoes, was built at Connah's Quay on the estuary of the Dee in North Wales. She was of 136 tonnes gross and just under 100 feet long and she could carry about 250 tons of cargo. She was employed in the general coasting trade carrying such bulk cargoes as coal, china clay, cement, bricks, fertilisers and grain. You can visit the ship on certain days of the week.

Bideford Railway Museum

Bideford Railway Museum

Running along the southern banks of the Taw and Torridge rivers, the branch was closed to passengers in 1965 and to freight in 1982. The trackbed now forms part of the Tarka Trail. We currently manage Instow signalbox and the Bideford Railway Heritage Centre, where short passenger rides are given on the Torridge Train.

There are several parks and play parks in the area. There are two - one for smaller children, one for large children, in Bideford and there is at least one with climbing frames and swings, in Torrington. There is another within a very pleasant short walking distance from the pub in Weare Giffard.
